Women in Business Series:  Living Your Next Level Life

Nov 1, 2022 | MCB Happenings, Women in Business

How many of us have felt “stuck” at one time or another?  Whether describing professional or personal pursuits, the concept of how to move past feeling “stuck” has been widely discussed. This topic was the inspiration for the most recent Women in Business Series event, sponsored by Matthews, Carter & Boyce and Flex Professionals, and held virtually on October 24.

Panelists Kathy Wilson, founder of Coach Kathy Wilson and Chris Smith, founder of ChangeSmith, were invited to talk about how to move past roadblocks in the workplace and beyond, transform your mindset to reach your goals, and contribute to a more positive, healthier workplace culture.

Wilson started the conversation noting how we all have external and internal roadblocks that must be identified when we feel stuck – and both must be addressed in order to achieve progress.  She spoke about the internal voices that hold many of us back, and our own doubts and feelings that in order to succeed we have to give something up. The importance of addressing and changing this mindset cannot be overemphasized.

Smith spoke to systemic roadblocks in the workplace. “Healthy leadership is meant to be in the service of people,” he said. He went on to emphasize that this is something that must be taught to leaders.  Companies do a great job onboarding people but then often leave them to flounder until review time. These circumstances often lead to employees who don’t reach out when they need support or have great ideas to share. This is damaging to the employees themselves, and leads to poor outcomes for employers, with increased turnover and decreased productivity.  Leaders need to be better about supporting team members at all times, not just certain times.

Both panelists also addressed what it means to be healthy and the importance of contributing to healthy environments and great people experiences in the workplace.

To be healthy is about feeling comfortable stepping into your workplace,  feeling whole, and feeling valued and knowing the environment is conducive to these things, Wilson shared.

She added:  “We feel like we are only bringing part of ourselves to work.  We need to say: ‘I earned this and I’m here and people need to hear my voice.’”
