District of Columbia Personal Income Tax: Taxpayers May Receive Notices for Additional Verification to Combat Identity Theft

For personal income tax purposes, the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) has issued a press release stating that it will issue notices to individual taxpayers whose returns have been selected for additional verification for the purpose of combating identity theft fraud. Taxpayers may receive one of the following verification notices:

  • a notice containing a Personalized Identification Number (PIN) along with specific instructions on how to verify the tax return using the PIN;
  • a notice containing instructions to take an identity verification quiz;
  • a notice requesting additional information to complete the processing of the tax return.

Taxpayers must follow the instructions on the notice they receive to complete the verification process.
